Premarital Counseling in Los Angeles

Virtual sessions throughout California

You have planned the day in detail. This is where you plan the marriage.

Premarital counseling is not for couples in trouble. It is for couples who would rather have the harder conversations now, before there is a history attached to them. Money, family, intimacy, and what you each quietly expect the next ten years to look like. We work with couples of all genders and orientations.

You Might Be Here Because…

  • You are excited about the wedding and quietly anxious about the marriage
  • You have never actually talked about money, and it keeps not coming up
  • You both want kids, or think you do, and you have never said the details out loud
  • One of your families has opinions, and you do not agree on how to handle them
  • You argue well some weeks and badly others, and you cannot predict which
  • You grew up watching a marriage you do not want to repeat
  • You are blending families, faiths, or cultures and want to do it thoughtfully
  • Someone told you premarital counseling is only for couples in trouble, and you are not sure that is true

How Premarital Counseling Helps:

  • Surface the assumptions you each carry without realizing it
  • Practice the conversations that usually get postponed
  • Learn your conflict pattern before it becomes a habit
  • Align on money, family, intimacy and expectations
  • Build repair skills you will use for decades

How we work

Our Approach to Premarital Counseling

You don't have to wait until something feels wrong to invest in your relationship.

Premarital counseling is an opportunity to slow down, have meaningful conversations, and build a stronger foundation for your future together.

Whether you're newly engaged or already planning your wedding, our premarital counseling programs offer a dedicated space to strengthen your connection and feel more confident about the life you're building together.

At LifeBloom Therapy, our approach to premarital counseling combines evidence-based relationship tools with thoughtful, personalized guidance. Using the PREPARE/ENRICH relationship assessment, we'll help you better understand your strengths as a couple, recognize patterns that may lead to conflict, and explore important topics like communication, finances, intimacy, family expectations, and shared goals.

Our sessions are collaborative, supportive, and designed to help you have conversations that might otherwise be difficult to navigate on your own. Rather than simply giving you a checklist of topics to discuss, we'll help you understand each other's perspectives, work through differences, and develop practical tools you can continue using long after your wedding day.

What We'll Explore Together

Eight subjects that come up in almost every marriage, worked through in sequence rather than whenever they happen to surface.

  • Money and financial expectations

Debt, savings, spending styles, separate or joint accounts, and what financial security means to each of you.

  • Family of origin and in-laws

What you each learned about marriage growing up, and how much influence family will have going forward.

  • Conflict and repair

How you each react under stress, the cycle you fall into, and how to come back to each other afterward.

  • Intimacy and sex

Desire, frequency, initiation, and how to talk about it without either of you feeling criticized.

  • Children and parenting

Whether, when, how many, and what you each picture parenting actually looking like day to day.

  • Roles, work and home life

Who does what, whose career bends, and how you will renegotiate it when life changes.

  • Values, faith and tradition

Where your beliefs align, where they differ, and how you will hold both without one person conceding.

  • Expectations about change

What you each assume will stay the same, and what you quietly hope the other will change.

Imagine Starting Your Marriage

  • Knowing how your partner thinks about money, not just that you avoid it
  • Having the hard conversation before it becomes an argument
  • Understanding what each of you learned about marriage growing up
  • Agreeing on what you want the first few years to look like
  • Repairing quickly when you do fight, because you both know how
  • Walking in on the day feeling steady, not just excited

Premarital Counseling Questions

Is premarital counseling only for couples with problems?

No. Most couples who come to us are doing well and want to stay that way. Premarital counseling is less about fixing something and more about having the conversations that get harder once there is a history attached to them.

How much does premarital counseling cost in Los Angeles?

Both programs are billed per couple as a package rather than per session. Essentials is $1,095 for five sessions and Signature is $1,695 for nine. Each includes the PREPARE/ENRICH relationship assessment, a private call with each partner beforehand, the LifeBloom couple workbook, and a 6-month check-in after you finish. Payment plans are available, so just ask during your consultation if that would make it easier.

What is the PREPARE/ENRICH assessment?

PREPARE/ENRICH is the most widely used premarital assessment in the country. You each complete it separately, answering questions about communication, money, family, expectations and conflict. Comparing your answers shows where you already agree and where you have different assumptions you may not have realized, and those results shape what your sessions focus on.

When should we start premarital counseling?

Most couples start three to six months before the wedding, which leaves room for weekly sessions without competing with the busiest stretch of planning. Earlier is fine, and so is later. If the wedding is close, tell us and we will talk about whether to begin now or start shortly after.

Does insurance cover premarital counseling?

No. Insurance covers treatment for a diagnosed condition, and premarital counseling is not that. It is preventive work for a relationship that is doing well, so it is paid out of pocket. That is also true of most premarital programs, not just ours. Payment plans are available if that helps.

How long does premarital counseling take?

Our Essentials program is five sessions and our Signature program is nine. Most couples meet weekly or every other week, so Essentials typically runs five to ten weeks and Signature nine to eighteen.

What is the difference between premarital counseling and couples therapy?

Couples therapy usually begins because something is painful right now. Premarital counseling is structured and forward-looking, working through a set of subjects in sequence rather than responding to whatever is most urgent that week.

Is premarital counseling religious?

Ours is not. We work with couples of any faith or none, and if religion matters to your marriage we treat it as one of the subjects to talk through rather than a framework we bring to it.

Do you work with same-sex and LGBTQ couples?

Yes. Our therapists work with couples of all orientations and relationship structures, and several of our team specialize in LGBTQ-affirming care.

Can we do premarital counseling online?

Yes, and most couples do. Virtual sessions are often the only way two busy people in the middle of wedding planning can reliably be in the same place at the same time. We see couples anywhere in California.

We have both been married before. Is this still for us?

Yes, and the conversations often matter more the second time. Both programs adapt to couples who are remarrying or blending families, with time for stepfamily dynamics, co-parenting across households, and the expectations each of you is carrying from a first marriage. Tell us on the consultation call and your therapist will plan around it.

We are already married. Is it too late?

Not at all. Plenty of couples do this work in the first year or two of marriage, or before a second marriage. The subjects are the same and the conversations are just as useful.
